The Padres continued their stockpile of draftee signings on Thursday when they inked their first-round pick, left-handed pitcher Nick Schmidt of the University of Arkansas, to a deal that includes a $1.29 million signing bonus.
Schmidt, the 23rd overall pick in the First-Year Player Draft, was named as a second-team All-American by Louisville Slugger, Baseball America, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and the American Baseball Coaches Association last season after going 11-3 with a 2.69 ERA in 18 starts for the Razorbacks.
The Padres think so highly of Schmidt that they will start him at Class A Fort Wayne instead of short-season Eugene of the Northwest League, where most newly drafted players with college experience go.
